“Save the cheerleader, save the world.” That may be the motto in her show Heroes, but it seems Hayden Panettiere couldn’t save her relationship – She is single again!

The 18-year old, who plays Claire Bennett, has split up from her boyfriend, Laguna Beach’s Stephen Colletti, according to reports from US magazine.

When asked by a reporter “Where’s Stephen?” at the MTV Video Music Awards, Hayden quite simply replied: “I don’t know. In California?”

A source claims that “their breakup has been a long time coming.” Although the pair are still civil towards each other. The actress herself says: “We are still very close friends and talk to each other frequently. We appreciate and support each other’s careers.”

The birthday girl earlier in the dayWe spotted Mario Lopez making his way into Hayden Panettiere’s birthday party at the LG House last night with a gift for Hayden’s mom the birthday girl, although unfortunately he wouldn’t let the contents of the bag he brought slip from his lips. Of course, he wasn’t the only attendee - other visitors making their way up to the LG House in Malibu included Rumer Willis, Hayden’s (much) younger brother, and a whole gaggle of her Heroes co-stars, including recent newcomer Kristen Bell. Oh, and keep an eye out for the slices of cake Hayden sent out to the paps waiting outside! How sweet - and we’re not just talking about the cake!
